The lake is approximately
5 acres in size. Originally dug out for the gravel some 20 years ago it has been
stocked with a variety of coarse fish.
There are two islands
located to the north which stand in depths between 6 feet to a couple of feet. They
are not accessible. Towards the middle of the lake, the depths are between 6
– 8 ft and the south end of the lake has pockets of up to 17ft.
From the footbridge
(nearest side to the cottage), the pegs sit on shallow margins and there is more of a gradient to work with. From the middle of the lake towards the south end but still staying this side of the cottage, the pegs
become deeper – there is a small ledge on some and then they drop to a good 10 - 12 ft.
On the far side of
the lake again there is more gradient and this is similar for most of the pegs even in the deepest end.
The fish range from
roach, perch, tench, bream (including black bream), crucian, mirror and common carp.
Pike also patrol the waters – therefore there can be some excellent opportunities with spinning. The odd barbel has been caught along with some trout as there is a natural spring in the lake – these
have been washed in from the brook – free of charge!!
Pole fishing has proven
to be very successful. The lake is not over stocked, but it is a proper coarse
fishing lake. The winds can pick up from the west very quickly and can provide
challenging fishing conditions. The bream definitely favour the choppy water
and have fished very well this year. Fly fishing is permitted on the lake.
The heaviest bag of
fish caught this year so far is 105lbs.
Heaviest bream caught
this year is 7.5lbs. The roach are just pushing a 1lb. Heaviest perch caught to date is 2lbs 2oz and the heaviest carp out this year is 24lbs.
The lake is full of
natural food, and therefore some baits are more successful than others. Worm,
bronze maggots etc are a favourite, along with some dog biscuits, and bread. We
do allow boilies, but ask that they are used properly and carefully. Pepperami
has proved popular with the carp!
Barbless hooks only
– even for spinning. Dead bait is allowed.
Bait boats are also
allowed but again we ask for careful use of bait.
14lb carp lines
please for all carp fishing.
We ask that all litter,
cans and nylon is taken away. No fires/BBQ’s or night fishing is permitted.
